President of the 81st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Public HealthProfessor, Department of Health Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, University of Yamanashi, Japan

On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 81st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Public Health to be held in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, from October 7 (Friday) to 9 (Sunday), 2022.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who boldly stood up and worked hard to protect the lives of residents amid the COVID-19 pandemic. I believe that you have expressed the very essence of public health activities in your work by implementing not only COVID-19 countermeasures but also countervailing risk measures, such as those against increasing suicides due to economic stagnation, increasing frailty due to self-restraint, and the worsening of illnesses from refraining to see the doctor.

The theme of this annual meeting is "Innovations in Public Health—Identifying Essence and Driving Change."

With the increasing need for mobile information and communication devices in our daily lives and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into social systems, health information use will be the basis for future health policy. In addition, with rapid advances in life sciences, genome science is enabling drug discovery, the development of cancer genome medicine, and vaccine development, while brain science and regenerative medicine are leading to the development of innovative medicine into the future.

Leveraging these scientific and technological innovations in public health activities is a significant challenge that must be considered. Therefore, we need new perspectives and methods to reform public health activities in order to solve the health policy problems highlighted by COVID-19. At the same time, we must return to the origins of public health activities and not lose sight of their essence. I believe it is time to undertake "public health innovation" with pride for public health professionals.

We will learn about new academic conferences acquired at the Kyoto and Tokyo annual meetings amid COVID-19 and consider them in a hybrid format to take advantage of the benefits of online and local venues. We will prepare special programs that you can enjoy only if you visit the site.

This annual meeting will be held in Yamanashi Prefecture for the first time. Public health officials from Yamanashi Prefecture will warmly welcome you and provide you with a venue for lively discussions about the future of public health. In addition, we hope that you will enjoy the various attractions in this prefecture, including Mt. Fuji, the Fuji Five Lakes, Shosenkyo Gorge, Kiyosato located at the southern foot of Mt. Yatsugatake, famous hot springs, world-class Koshu wine, the most productive grape harvest in Japan, Hoto, Torimotsu, and more.
